Yields: 1 drink
Prep time: 2 minutes
Brew time: 25-30 seconds (for espresso)
Ingredients & Equipment:
Espresso Machine: A home espresso machine or a pod-based machine
Espresso Beans: Freshly roasted beans are best
Coffee Grinder: A burr grinder for a fine espresso grind
Water: Filtered water for the espresso machine and for diluting
Shot Glass or Espresso Cup
Coffee Mug
Key Parameters:
Espresso Shot: A standard shot of espresso is about 1 oz (30 ml). A double shot is typically 2 oz (60 ml).
Water Temperature: The water you use to dilute the espresso should be hot, ideally between 160°F and 180°F (71°C to 82°C). Using water that's too hot can scald the espresso and create a burnt taste.
Espresso-to-Water Ratio: This is entirely up to your preference, but a common starting point is a 1:2 ratio (1 part espresso to 2 parts hot water). For a single 1 oz shot of espresso, you would use about 2 oz of hot water. For a double shot, use about 4 oz of hot water.
Instructions:
Pull Your Espresso Shot: Grind your beans finely and pull a shot of espresso according to your machine's instructions. A good shot should take about 25-30 seconds to pull.
Heat Your Water: While your espresso is brewing, heat your filtered water. You can use an electric kettle or simply heat it on the stovetop.
Combine: Pour the hot water into your coffee mug first.
Add Espresso: Pour the freshly brewed espresso shot into the mug with the hot water. The espresso should be added last to preserve the crema (the foamy layer on top), which adds a nice aroma and visual appeal.
Enjoy: Give it a gentle stir and enjoy your classic Americano immediately.
Tips for Success:
Preheat Your Mug: Pouring hot water into a cold mug will cool your drink down too quickly. Preheat your mug with hot water before you start.
Hot Water First: Always pour the hot water into the cup before the espresso to protect the delicate crema.
Iced Americano: To make an Iced Americano, simply pour the hot espresso over a cup filled with ice, then top with cold filtered water.
