Yields: 1 serving
Prep time: 2-3 minutes
Brew & Steam time: 3-5 minutes
Ingredients:
Espresso: 1-2 shots of freshly brewed espresso (approx. 1-2 oz or 30-60 ml). No espresso machine? See "Coffee Base Alternatives" below.
Milk: 6-10 oz (180-300 ml) of your preferred milk. Dairy milk (whole, 2%) steams well and creates good microfoam. Oat milk is a popular non-dairy alternative that also steams nicely. Almond, soy, and coconut milk can also be used, though results may vary in terms of foam.
Optional
- Flavored Syrup: 1-3 tablespoons (0.5 - 1.5 oz / 15-45 ml) of your favorite coffee syrup (e.g., vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, mocha, peppermint, pumpkin spice, lavender, raspberry). Adjust to your sweetness preference.
- Sauce (for thicker flavors like Mocha or Caramel): 1-2 tablespoons of chocolate sauce or caramel sauce.
- Spices (infused or mixed in): Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin pie spice. You can add a pinch to your coffee grounds before brewing, stir into the espresso, or sprinkle on top.
- Extracts: 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, peppermint extract, or almond extract (use sparingly as they are potent).
- Sweetener: If your flavoring isn't sweet enough (e.g., using only spices or unsweetened cocoa powder for mocha), add sugar, simple syrup, honey, or maple syrup to taste.
- Toppings: Whipped cream Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder Caramel drizzle Cinnamon sprinkle
Equipment:
Espresso machine (or alternative coffee brewing method)
Milk steaming pitcher
Steam wand (from espresso machine) or a separate milk frother (handheld, electric, or stovetop)
Latte mug (typically 8-12 oz)
Measuring spoons
Instructions:
Prepare Your Flavoring (if needed): If making a mocha, you can mix cocoa powder with a little hot water or some of the hot espresso to create a smooth chocolate base before adding it to the cup.
Add Flavoring to Mug (optional): Pour your chosen flavored syrup, sauce, or add extracts/spices into your serving mug.
Brew Espresso: Prepare 1-2 shots of espresso directly into the mug over the flavoring (if using syrup/sauce). This helps the flavoring incorporate well. Stir gently if needed.
Steam and Froth Milk: Pour cold milk into your steaming pitcher. Using a Steam Wand: Purge the steam wand first. Insert the tip just below the surface of the milk and turn on the steam. Gently lower the pitcher as the milk stretches (aerates) to create a thin layer of microfoam. You're looking for a "wet paint" or "melted ice cream" texture, not stiff, bubbly foam like for a cappuccino. Once the milk has increased in volume by about 20-30%, submerge the wand deeper into the milk to heat it through, creating a swirling vortex to break down larger bubbles. Heat until the pitcher is hot to the touch but not scorching (around 140-160°F or 60-70°C). Using a Milk Frother: Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Some frothers both heat and froth, while others just froth (you'd need to heat the milk separately). After steaming/frothing, tap the pitcher on the counter a few times to knock out any large air bubbles and swirl the milk to create a glossy, uniform texture.
Pour the Milk: Hold the mug at a slight angle. Pour a small amount of the steamed milk into the center of the espresso, incorporating it. Then, raise the pitcher slightly and continue pouring, allowing the frothed milk to flow out and create a smooth top. You can try your hand at latte art if you're feeling adventurous! Aim for about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch layer of foam on top for a traditional latte.
Garnish (optional): Add whipped cream, a drizzle of sauce, or a sprinkle of spice on top if desired.
Serve and Enjoy: Your homemade flavored latte is ready!
Coffee Base Alternatives (No Espresso Machine):
Strongly Brewed Coffee: Use a Moka pot, AeroPress, or even a French press to make 2-4 oz of very strong coffee. The flavor profile will be different from espresso but still enjoyable.
Instant Espresso Powder: Dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of instant espresso powder in 2 oz of hot water.
Popular Flavor Combinations:
Vanilla Latte: Vanilla syrup.
Caramel Latte: Caramel syrup or sauce, often topped with caramel drizzle.
Mocha Latte: Chocolate syrup/sauce or cocoa powder mixed with a bit of hot water/espresso.
Hazelnut Latte: Hazelnut syrup.
Peppermint Mocha Latte (Seasonal): Chocolate sauce and peppermint syrup.
Pumpkin Spice Latte (Seasonal): Pumpkin spice syrup, or a mix of pumpkin puree, spices, and sweetener.
Lavender Latte: Lavender syrup.
Honey Lavender Latte: Honey and lavender syrup.
Tips for Success:
Use Cold Milk: Cold milk froths better.
Don't Overheat Milk: Overheating can scald the milk and ruin the flavor and texture.
Quality Ingredients: Good quality coffee beans and flavoring will make a noticeable difference.
Adjust to Taste: Sweetness and flavor intensity are personal. Don't be afraid to adjust the amount of flavoring.
Clean Equipment Promptly: Wipe down your steam wand immediately after use.
Enjoy experimenting with different flavors to find your perfect homemade latte!
